Seeing Our Neighbor in Need

The Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31)

19 “Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. 20 “And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21 and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. 22 “Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23 “In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 “And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’ 25 “But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 ‘And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ 27 “And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29 “But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 “But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ 31 “But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’” (Check this and other translations of this story using the Bibletab.com Concordance.)

Why do you think the rich, young man never noticed (saw) Lazarus at his door? (post your comments on the blog) In your life is there someone that you treat the same way the rich, young man treated Lazarus? Why do you think you treat this person or group like that.? (Bring these ideas to class with you, where we will discuss them)

Many times we don't see the neighbor at our door because we aren't aware of them. We may be caught up in our own worlds. We may be distracted by our toys, our ipods, our cell phones, etc. We may be overwhelmed with our own problems and concerns.

Jesus in the story of Lazarus and the rich young man urges us to be watchful and awake. Awareness or attention is a spiritual practice of many faith traditions."
We must stay alert or we risk missing critical elements of the spiritual life — moments of grace, opportunities for gratitude, evidence of our connections to others, signs of the presence of Spirit. The good news is that attention can be practiced anywhere, anytime, in the daily rounds of our lives."(Spirituality and Practice)

Awareness is about paying attention to the needs of others and the needs of Earth. The following are some thoughts on awareness and attention:

  • Permit me to say without reservation that if all people were attentive, if they would undertake to be attentive every moment of their lives, they would discover the world anew. They would suddenly see that the world is entirely different from what they had believed it to be. — Jacques Lusseyran in Against the Pollution of the I
  • "Our difficult and very urgent task is to accept the truth that nature is not primarily a property to be possessed, but a gift to be received with admiration and gratitude. Only when we make a deep bow to the rivers, oceans, hills, and mountains that offer us a home, only then can they become transparent and reveal to us their real meaning.

"A friend once gave me a beautiful photograph of a water lily. I asked him how he had been able to take such a splendid picture. With a smile he said, 'Well, I had to be very patient and very attentive. It was only after a few hours of compliments that the lily was willing to let me take her picture.' " (Henri Nouwen)

Explain in at least two sentences, what you have learned about awareness from this article. Don't forget to also include your comments an answer to the question, "
Why do you think the rich, young man never noticed (saw) Lazarus at his door?".

Why do you think the rich, young man never noticed (saw) Lazarus at his door?".I think the rich , young man never saw or noticed Lazarus at his door because he was poor and was covered in sores. The rich, young man was wealthy and had very good health. Lazarus was begging for food when the rich, young man had a lot of food. He also had very rich looking clothes unlike Lazarus. Since Lazarus was not like the rich, young man he did not notice him. I do not think others should be judged for what they have and don't have. You should treat everyone equally for who they are as a person not the material things they own.People should look at others for what self-qualities they have, and like them for those. - r.cinney 4

The rich man never ever saw or noticed Lazarus at the door because he didn't want see him because he was poor and covered in sores. The man was rich and he didn't care about Lazarus because he wasn't rich and had nothing. Treat everyone equally because if you treat someone the way you'll want to be treated, they'll treat you the way you want to be treated.

I think the rich man never saw Lazarus at his door because he didn't want to. Obviously the rich man didn't want to see him, because if he did he would've made an effort for it. I think that no one should be treated any different from someone else because of their amount of money, or the type of clothes on. LOOKS DON'T MATTER! So get on with life because he doesn't have the best clothes on. No one should treat you differently because of the clothes you wear, or the complection of your face, or anything! So when the rich man was ignoring Lazarus because of his looks, he probably had some insecurities about himself. Treat people the way you want to be treated. It's a rule that should be in affect 24/7.

I think the rich man never saw Lazarus at the door because the rich man was too caught up in himself. He was living such a good and rich life he probably only cared about himself. Lazerus on the other hand was suffering and i'm sure if the rich man did notice him then he wouldn't have cared because he was too self-centered. I think this really teachs us that we need start noticing the people in our lives that are like Lazerus. When we notice and identify who these people are then we will be able to give them the help they need. I think if the people on Earth start working together and stop being self-centered then we would be able to conquer some of the problems our world faces.

I think the rich, young man never saw Lazarus because he wasn't like him. The rich man had tons of food and Lazarus was so hungry he was begging for food. Poor Lazarus had sores so bad the dogs were licking them and the rich man was in great health. The main reason the rich man didn’t see Lazarus was because Lazarus was a poor man and the rich man was so wrapped up in his wealth that he didn’t care to notice.

i think that the rich man never noticed Lazarus because he was to caught up in himself and being rich. he had no intetions of looking out for those who needed his help because he thought he had it all. he was so oblivous to this man, that even the dogs tryed to help and confort. this has taught me to notice people for who they are and accept them. if you get all caught up in yourself you miss out on the people who really need confort.. even if they just seem to be the poor old man with sores sitting on the street. everyone deserves to be noticed and being full of yourself brings you no justice, just a selfobsorbed mind.

I think the rich man never noticed Lazarus at his door because he was so caught up in his own life and material possessions that he neglected to help those in need. In my own life I do sometimes treat someone or a group like that because I don't notice them and I don't notice they're in need because I don't assosiate with them often. People should make more of an effort to look and see if someone is in need and help them, since that is what we are called to do.

I believe that the rich man never saw Lazarus because the rich man chose not to. He probably noticed him but Lazarus was of no value to him. The rich man was too busy caught up in his own life to notice others in need. When it came down to crunch time, when the rich man was in darkness he chose to mention Lazarus because it was vital to his eternal life. God knew that the man chose to ignore Lazarus, until Lazarus meant something to the rich man. I believe that in our own lives we shouldn't ignore others in need, but reach out to them. We could show them the light of Jesus or just lend them a helping hand. After all when we help others, we are helping Jesus.

I think there were a couple of reasons why the rich man never noticed or saw Lazarus. One reason that the rich man didn't see Lazarus was that the rich man was all about him self and didn't care about anyone in nned. Another reason why I think the rich man didn't see him at the door is that the rich man didn't care what happen to others as long as he was safe and had his possessions. In my life I try very hard to notice everyone and try to be nice to everyone but, there are sometimes when you do npot notice them. I think everyone should try very hard to notice all people and make them feel welcome.

There could be many reasons that the rich man never saw Lazarus at his door. One reason could be that the man just didn't care. He might have thought that if Lazarus was covered in sores and extremely poor, he had done something to deserve it. Lazarus might have just not noticed Lazarus. He may have figured that if his life was so good, then why wouldn't everyone else's be? I think that no matter what you look like or how much money you have, you should accept and give to other people. No matter where you stand, there will always be someone who has less or more than you.

I think that the rich man never noticed Lazarus at his door because he was too caught up in all of his material possessions to realize that there are alot of people who need help in the world. He didn't give any help to anyone and just ignored all of the people that were suffering. He only cared for himself and didn't care about other people who probably needed the money that the rich man had more than the rich man himself really needed. Even though he could have helped Lazarus, he neglected to notice Lazarus in the first place.. From reading this story, I learned that there are some people in the world that do not offer help to anyone, even if they could help those people alot. Also, I learned that you should treat others the way you would want to be treated. Even if the person does not have as much money or possessions as you do, you are still equal in God's eyes. By helping the people in need in our lives, we are doing what God calls us to do each day. By looking at a person through their personality and their heart instead of through what they have, we are truly showing others the respect and love that God wants us to show for all people. If everyone treated others the way we want to be treated, the world would be a better place for all of mankind.

I think the rich man never saw Lazarus because he felt he didn't need to pay attention to him. I think the rich man thought since it wasn't him who was poor and covered in sores that he didn't have to do anything about it. This taught me that just because i'm happy with my life, doesn't mean that everyone else has the same great, happy life that I do. This really made me start to think about how I need to start noticing the people who need a helping hand, a friend to talk to or even just someone to be nice to them. Everyone needs someone in life, just because i found mine doesn't mean that everyone else found out who they need.

I believe that the rich man never saw Lazarus at the door for one main reason. This reason was that he saw him but chose to not really look and act upon what he saw. The rich man lived a great life, probably a very selfish one. He had purple clothing, a lot of money, and plenty of food. He lived such a great life that he didn't want to go out of his way to help someone, someone that meant nothing to him. Unlike the rich man, Lazarus was poor and had many sores on his body. The rich man paid no attention to Lazarus until he needed him to help make his life better. After they both died Lazarus was allowed to live for eternity with Jesus, and the rich man wasn't.I think we all should always be as kind and helpful to others as we can. We should follow the golden rule- treat others the way you would want to be treated. If everyone made an effort to try to follow this great rule, the world would be a lot better place and, it could solve many problems we are facing in our world today.

The rich man never noticed the poor man because he was too caught up in his own life. He never took the time to look around and see the people around him that he was more than capable of helping. I think people need to take this story as a lesson adn make sure they never end up like the rich man. No matter what we are always able to help someone even in little ways that can make a great inpack on someones life. Everyone deserves to be treated with the same respect no matter what.

I think the rich young man never noticed or saw Lazarous because he probably thoguht he was too good to talk to the poor man. Maybe he didnt want to be seen talking to the man beacue people might make fun of him and think he was one of the poor people. It is hrad to step out of your own circle to reach out to people who you think are less than what you wuold consider cool or normal. i think this teaches us that we should not be caught up in self centerted materialistic thoughts and look out for our nieghbors. This means talk to people who look sad and help the poor dont act like they are some kind of awful creature. I think the rich man didn't notice Lazarus for a few reasons.

1) Ignorance is bliss. Some people think that their own little corner of the world is perfect and flawless. To them it might be but, there is always something happening in, near, or far away from the corner.

Global Warming, I asked a random person and he/she said he/she didn't believe it. Too bad he/she can't see that we stand at the edge of a crumbling world.

2) Some people's lives are so completely horrible, frustrating, problematic, hectic, complicated, and depressing that they have no energy to notice anything outside their bubble of torment. We don't know if the rich man was truly happy. He might have been struggling on the inside or with other matters.

That's still no excuse for not noticing a deing man on your stoop (pretty hard to miss) but it's possible. It happens every day. Global Warming, some people just don't give a rats hat.

3) (last one, I promise) Some people think they're to good for stuff. In the world, there are dirty jobs (garbage collecting, pluming, recycling bottles off the street, etc.) but someone has to do 'em! The rich man might have been the heartless past-incarnate of Hitler and thought, "Ha, die you dog!" or, "I'm too good for you and you're to low for me."

Those are some of my ideas.

I believe that the rich, young man did not notice Lazarus because he was to caught up in the fact that he is rich. He payed to much attention to the material stuff he had, and not enough attention to the needs of others. This article teaches me about awerness in many ways. I learned that it doesn't matter what material stuff you have thats important, but it's the people you have in your life to share it with. I also learned that if somebody is in need, don't look past them if they aren't your friend, lend them a hand and let them now that you are there for them.

I think that the rich man didn't notice Lazarus at his door because the rich man was to preoccupied with his own life. He was living a very rich and prosperous life. Since Lazarus was begging for food with the dogs, the rich man neglected to even see Lazarus at his door. The rich man probably did notice Lazarus but after seeing how poor Lazarus was, the rich man probably felt that Lazarus was of no importance to him. Therefore the rich man just ignored him. Even though the rich man had a great life on Earth, the way he treated Lazarus may have somewhat backfired on him after they both died because the rich man failed to help out Lazarus when he needed him the most. What I have learned from this is that even though it may be difficult, we need to be aware of the suffering and poverty people go through everyday. I have also learned that there is poverty all around us and if we worked together to give those who are less fortunate what they need, we could possibly end poverty in are world.

The rich man never noticed Lazarus at his door because, like many of us, we don't look to find people in need. i believe that if the rich man was told about the poor man, then the rich man would have noticed him and helped him. He is just overcome with his wealth and his possessions that he can't even notice the people that need help. I think the rich man never noticed Lazarus at his door because he was too caught up in his everyday life and he wasn't worried about people who wern't like him. I think that Lazarus was a man who didn't even know himself. He was blinded from everything around him because he was too caught up in his money. He has no respect for other people and didn't care what others thought. He was so obsessed with himself that he judged people. In reality today we shouldn't judge others by how they look or how much money they have. We were all created equal in God's eyes and that's how it should stay. Like the first commandment says, dont put anything before God.

I think the rich man did not notice Lazarus, because he did not want to or because he thought he was better than Lazarus. The rich man judged Lazarus only based upon his outward appearance which is not right.Instead of helping Lazarus, which would have been an easy thing to do he let him die and that is why he was sent to Hades. In my own life, and I know I'm not the only person who does this,I sometime find that I judge people not by who they are, but by what their outward appearance looks like.Lately I have realized that just because you might not be"cool" doesn't mean you are not a great person.I feel we should really try not to be blinded by people's exteriors, because it could possibly prevent us from meeting a really great person.

I believe that the rich young man CHOSE not to see Lazarus. Lazarus was poor, he had nothing, and he was sick. The poor young man chose not to believe that there was anyone who needed to beg to get their basic needs. While building his perfect world, the rich young man continued to be in denial about his neighbor who really needed his help.

I think that a lot of people like to live in their own little world and choose not to see the world for what is really there. People are suffering for many different reasons every single day and many of them go without help because of people who choose not to see them. Just because a person doesn't have things that a better-off person has, doesn't mean that they're a bad person or that they did something bad to be in their situation and I think that may be another view from the rest of the world. No matter what someones problem is, we should help them.

I think that the rich man never noticed Lazarus because he didn't care about other and what they were doing. All the rich man cared about was himself and how his life was going. All the rich man had to do to help Lazarus was give him alittle money or some food but he choose not to because he didn't care. That is just like people in our world today many, many people are starving and do not have anything, and there are rich people in our world who have so much money that they don't know what to do with it. All these rich people in the world should do the opposite of what the rich man did in the bible. Also, any one could do this not just rich people. Instead of just not caring, care donate to people in need in anyway that you can. Also, think about something before you buy say do I really need another...and, if your having second thought about don't buy it. Give that money to someone who really needs it instead of you just buying it for fun.

I think the rich man never noticed Lazarus at his door because he wanted his world to be "flawless" and with a poor old man covered in sores his life wouldn't be perfect. He wanted to make believe that old man didn't even exist thats why the rich man never ordered people to take him away because that would mean he would have had to see Lazarus .

This article helped me realize that there are people out there that need our help and we can't see it. They could be right in front of us and we might not even know it. What we need to do is pay attention to all the little things in life, that way we don't miss it when someone calls out to us for help. I think the rich man never noticed Lazarus at his door because he never tried helping those in need. He missed all the signs that there were people out there that needed help because he didnt care! He had some many possessions that distracted him that he couldn't see anything else.

The rich man also probably didn't see Lazarus because he didn't want to, Lazarus wasn't wealthy, he had nothing. Lazarus wasn't worried about having the best of the best, he just wanted to have just a little bit more food to stay alive a bit longer.

The importance of this passage is to teach us that looks don't matter and that what we have doesn't make us who we are, it is what we live for that makes us who we are. We should try to help everyone that needs our help no matter what they look like, what their health is, or what they own. We should treat everyone equally because thats the way we would want to be treated.

I think that the rich man never saw Lazarus becuase he was too caught up with his own life. He did not take the time to realize that others were in need all around him. Since Lazarus was begging and did not look like the rich man or have anything, he probably thought of Lazarus as just another annoyance thats does not need to be helped.
From this article, I learned that just because someone doesn't look like you or have as much as you have, you should not just ignore them. You should welcome these people and treat them as you would like to be treated. After all, kindness is always rewarded.

I think that the rich man never saw or noticed Lazarus at his door because the rich man bases what he sees on material, wealth, and looks, and not on what he should. I think that the rich man didn't noticed him because Lazarus had sores. I think that the rich man should have saw Lazarus at his door because it is the things on the inside that count. The rich man did not notice Laazarus because he may have only been thinking about himself and his needs and wants. The rich man may have felt that by helping Laqzarus he mwould have to share his riches.

Since our fire in our home I have been amazed at every neighbor that we have come to know which is almost all of them. We took the time to say hi when we were out walking the dog, helped some of the elderly ones shovel snow or take out the trash. When we needed friends they were and still are there for us. By us helping others and valuing others we have become rich with many friendships.

Everyone should take the time to help one another. Say hello to each other. There is good in everyone and even if we are not rich with things we are rich in time which we can use to help others. I am thankful for my neighbors.------M.Wasiczko

When the rich man saw the poor man, he direguarded him mostly because he was so self centered and oblivious to all of the bad happening around him. The rich man was properous and healthy, while the poor man had nothing and had open sores all over his body.
From this article, I have learned that caring and sharing with others is always the best choice, and that it always pays off in the end. Also, I learned that if you can care for just one person, it can possibly make a very large difference in the world to benifit everyone. A great example of what could possibly happen if you don't repent for your sins and love others was the fate of the rich man: to forever perish in Hell for not paying enough attention to other people that he viewed as "smaller" in his life. The rich man never saw Lazarus because he chose not to. He was to caught up in his own world to be bothered with Lazarus. That cost him dearly. the rich, young man in the story didn't really do anything mean to Lazurus. He didn't treat him meanly on purpose, he did not beat the man, call him names, or tell him to get off his property. However, he did ignore the man, which can hurt just as much as physically or emotionally hurting someone.
The rich man seemed to have been living a very comfotable life, at least when it came to material objects. Isn't it shocking how he didn't even help Lazurus who was ill, starving, and poor, especially when Lazurus was literally on his doorstep? Maybe the rich man CHOSE not to see Lazurus, maybe he didn't want to realize the pain and sufferingin the world, and in his own town. Maybe he just didn't care.
He could have just been too involved in his own life to notice Lazurus.
I really don't think that we, the students at Catholic High are very different from the rich man. Because we live in America, we are already richer than most of the world. However, we are more similar to the rich man in the way that we think. We are all busy with family, friends, school, sports and activities that we may not always notice what is going on around us. People need our help every day, it is our job and responsibility to open our eyes and help others any way we can, every single day.
I personally will try my hardest to be more aware of others needs, no matter how big or small, and help care for people any way I can. Everyone can make a difference in someone elses life! We just have to treat others as we would want to be treated. I will practice this golden rule more strictly in my own life.

But, what the rich man never knew was that God was on Lazarus's side, he would always be there for him. Unlike the rich man, Lazarus was rich in love and faith and that's all that he needed. People don't care about the people who have nothing. Many people today see the poor as garbage, a waste of space and not their buisness. The Rich man did not notice Lazarus at his door, because the rich guy is so opulence that he never face such a poor person which means that he does not care if this poor man was sitting. In my life there are some people that i don't even care even though they need people's help. Those people are living in Africa or South America and Asia. Some countries are not as much developed as United States, so some people can't eat a full meal a day. And some people can not be educated because they can not afford it and in some country there would be not enough school. So in developed country like U.S try to help them but there are not many people who really cares about this. Honestly i paid just 50 cents to the money we raise in theology class in South America. People ignores this people because they think that they would not get anything if they do such a thing.
What i learned from this article is that People should care more about poor people and they should think what if i was in that position? And also People should raise some money to help them and most importantly we should teach them who the God is...

I know the rich man probably saw Lazarus, but he didnt really see Lazarus, he only saw a man with no money, hardly any clothes, and sores on his body. It still happens today, in 2007. Even in High School people see others who dont have the newest pair of sneakers on, or the news style of jeans. People look at people like that and see a person who doesn`t have anything and ask themselves "well why should i bother with them?" What we all need to do, and what I need to do also is, look at people as everyone being equal, all that matters is whats on the inside. Thats what the rich man should of done to poor Lazarus, who was nobody in the rich mans eyes. Afterall, what would Jesus do?
